Dear Trichy,

Some of us chose you. Some of us came back to you. Either way, here we are, laptops open, trying to make a living from a city that was never supposed to be “where the work is”. We would like to say thank you, and also a few honest things.

The afternoons are long

Let us start with the heat. Around two o’clock, the whole city takes a breath and slows. The roads shimmer, the fan goes round, and focus becomes a rare and precious thing.

Working here teaches you to respect the afternoon. You do the hard thinking early, while the air is kind. You learn that a cool room is not a luxury but a working tool. You discover that the best plan for a hot day is to be somewhere with proper air conditioning and a steady connection, and to be gentle with yourself about the post-lunch hour.

The evenings are worth the wait

And then the day turns. The light goes soft, the air loosens, and the whole city comes outdoors. Temples glow, bazaars hum, tea stalls fill with people saying nothing urgent at all.

This is the hidden gift of working in a city this size. The commute is short. Your evening begins ten minutes after your day ends, not two hours. You can finish a deadline and still be in time for a walk, a plate of something hot and a chat with someone you actually like.

A short commute is a quiet kind of wealth.

What the city asks of a freelancer

A smaller city asks you to be a little resourceful. Clients may be a continent away, so you need to look reliable from a distance. The power can wobble. Your home may be full of life that has nothing to do with your invoice.

So you build small systems:

  • A fixed place to work that is not the dining table, so that “work” and “home” stop sharing a chair.
  • A backup for the bad days: power, connection, a second plan.
  • A few people nearby, even if only to nod to in the morning.

None of these is complicated. Together they turn a scattered day into a steady one.

A desk in the middle of it all

The best part of working here is that you do not have to leave in order to do good work. You can stay close to family, food and familiar streets, and still show up properly for a client on a video call.
