Rockfort: the rock that watches over Trichy

A great rock rises from the middle of Tiruchirappalli, carrying cave temples, a fort and a long stairway to a summit with a view of the rivers and the city.

Tiruchirappalli has a skyline with one unmistakable shape in it. A great rock lifts out of the flat city, and on top of it sits a small temple, seen from half the neighbourhoods in town. This is the Rockfort, called Malaikottai in Tamil.

Caves before the fort

The oldest structures here are cave temples cut into the rock in the Pallava era. They are usually dated to the sixth and seventh centuries of the common era and associated with Mahendravarman I, a king remembered as a patron of rock-cut architecture.

Long before any walls went up, then, people were carving shrines into the stone and finding it a place worth worshipping at.

The fort grows

The fort that gives the Rockfort its name came later. The Nayaks of Madurai, ruling under the Vijayanagara Empire, fortified the place and completed much of the complex. In the centuries that followed, it was used as a fort by the Carnatic and British powers as well.

The rock has always been strategic. Standing on it, you can see why: it commands the country around it, with the Kaveri and its neighbouring river never far from view.

Two temples, one climb

Partway up the rock stands the Thayumanavar temple, dedicated to Shiva. At the summit is the Ucchi Pillayar temple, for Ganesha. A long rock-cut stairway links them, and many people climb it slowly, stopping at the landings to look back.

Both are living places of worship, so go in the way you would to any temple: dress modestly, leave footwear where asked, and check current timings and rules before you set out.

The view is the reward

At the top, the city opens beneath you. The rivers, the temple towers of Srirangam, the roofs and the wide sky all sit in one frame. It is one of the best places to understand how Tiruchirappalli is laid out.

You climb for the temple, and you stay for the view.
